Religion and Culture
Most people are Buddhists in this region. The Muslim community of Arghons also stay with the people here in harmony. There are many socio-religious festivals that are celebrated by the people here such as Archery, Polo and other annual festivals held at the monasteries.
The simple sweet people is what define the people here. Their outfit is different from rest of India mostly woolen robes and head band that also protect them from cold weather.
The Zangla Monastery is rich in its fresco paintings. These fresco paintings portray a strong insight into the austere life of the Buddhists. It is located in Tsa-zar village, between Zangla and Strongdey. Tourists can enjoy a bird's-eye view from the hill top castle which still exhibits architectural beauty.
The eldest son of the family is the head of the family and inherits all the property. The younger siblings may choose to become Lamas.
The Lamas are the spiritual gurus of Buddhism who stay in the monasteries and preach and pray .
Zangla is situated in the Kargil district and is 32 kms from Padum. Nearest airport is Srinagar and Leh.
