Diskit - a green oasis
Diskit lies in the Nubra Valley of J&K and is a beautiful valley town of Ladakh. The Nubra Valley known as the Valley of flowers is famous for its green landscapes, trekking and the Diskit monastery.

This place is dominated by Buddhist which gets its roots from the Tibetan people. The Gelugpa sect is residing in the valley. Dosmoche or the " festival of scapegoat" is celebrated in the month of February within the monastery premises and people attend it in large numbers.
The mask dance by the Lamas is a must watch.
The people here lead a simple life. The Tibetan Children are taught English and other Science subjects by an NGO with support from the monastery.
The Diskit monastery is the largest and the oldest Gompa in the Nubra valley which is situated on the right bank of the Shyok river. The monastery has some good frescos and is linked to the Mongol mythology. A huge 32 metres statue of Maithreya Buddha is located near the monastery which displays Tibetan architecture and is also the home to the photong of Nubra.
The eldest son of the family inherits the property and takes up all responsibilities. The younger sons may continue in the family life or may become Lamas.
Buddhism is the essence of Ladakh. It is home to many monks who are preachers of peace and prosperity.
The nearest airport is Leh. The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi and from there cabs are easily available.
